The Urban Meyer Burger at GameDay Grille
As a graduate and lifetime alum for Ohio State University, I wanted this burger to be “the one”. named for one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, and current OSH coach Urban Meyer, how could it be anything but the best?
I have been to GameDay before and already knew it was a good place to eat. I had just never tried their signature burger before, and was excited to dive right in. The burger itself is prepared very well – thick and juicy, no complaints. The onions, lettuce and tomato were fresh.
Is That a Hot Dog?!?
The big addition to this burger though is a Angus beef hotdog (quarter pound), butterflied and stuck under the pepper jack cheese topping. This extra meat gives the sandwich a more “salty” taste as you would expect from a hot dog. As with most popular recipes, to counter one flavor you add in some of the opposite. So they also include their own sweet bar-b-que sauce to the mix.
I have a big mouth (or so I have been told), and this monster of a burger was difficult to bite into. It is stacked high once assembled, and started falling apart on me about halfway through. You could definitely taste the hot dog and bar-b-que sauce in almost every bite. It was a good burger indeed, especially if you like the sweeter after-tastes.
Typically, I am more of a banana pepper, mustard type of guy, so while the sweet was very good, it just wasn’t really my thing. To me, it seemed like the taste of the burger was lost in the salty hot dog and sweet sauce…and I didn’t come there for a hot dog! Give me the beef baby! Again…very good burger and if your tastes tilt toward the sweeter spectrum, then I’m sure you would love it. Huge burger too – so it will fill you up.
So I guess my initial hope that the Urban Meyer name could somehow produce a national championship burger fell a little short for me personally. I hate seeming negative at all, because it really was a good burger. But I am on a quest to find the BEST burger around.
As with any rating system, the most important answer is to the question “Would I come back here and buy it again?” The answer to that is maybe.
